Description

Here's an example of branching, meaning the music is broken up into musical phrases or loops triggered by game events. This technique can be used to create variation by randomizing phrases over time but also adding a more musical transition between different game states. The advantage of waiting until the musical
phrase ends before moving on to the next one is that another cue or transition will never interrupt the current phrase. In this video the music is lined up as three playlists, triggered by the game states 'explore', 'suspense and 'combat' .
Gameplay footage from 'Gears 5' was added to make the clip a bit more interesting.

Vertical Remixing (layering) is a common interactive music technique allowing the drama and tension to be adjusted by adding additional layers, or by taking them away. Layering is commonly used to quickly change between different game states or environments.

Stingers can be used to draw player attention to important game events.

Some gameplay footage from 'Battlefield Hardline' was added to make this example a bit more interesting.

This is a walkthrough showing how I work with interactive music in a program called Wwise. This middleware software can comunicate with game engines such as Unity and Unreal and is used for implementation of game music, dialogue and sound FX.

Wwise is packed with complex features so that programmers don't have to recreate those features from scratch, and personally, I love working with it!!

About

Fredrik is a Swedish composer and multi instrumentalist whose musical journey began from childhood years. At the age of six, he started to compose simple two handed melodies by the piano and soon realized that he could play different kind of music by ear.

As a teenager he began to play a variety of instruments in different bands and musical genres.

Fredrik has always been fascinated by film music and when computer technology made it possible to use, a  fairly realistic software orchestra, he began to write his own orchestral music inspired by his favourite movies.

While studying music for film, TV and games at Berklee College of Music, Fredrik expanded his musical knowledge and received a coveted scholarship for his academic excellens.

- "Music is such a great tool to bring emotion to a production. The music is actually not supposed to be listened to, but is there, embeded in the story to enhanze the exprerience of the audience. Music has the ability to tell someones thoughts or feelings and the musical color combinations are endless. That's the magic of music".
